PDFMonkey vs DocsAutomator: Features and Pricing

An API that generates PDFs and images on one side, a no-code tool built around Google Docs and Word on the other. They overlap less often than you’d think.

Last checked: 26 October 2026. Prices and features change: if you spot something out of date, tell us and we’ll fix it.

We make PDFMonkey, so keep that in mind as you read. Everything we say about DocsAutomator comes from DocsAutomator’s own pages, listed at the bottom, and there’s a whole section on where they do better than us. Prices come from each company’s public pricing page: ours in euros excluding VAT, DocsAutomator’s in US dollars.

TL;DR

DocsAutomator is a no-code workflow tool: templates in Google Docs or Word, data from Airtable, Notion or Sheets, then signing and delivery. PDFMonkey is a generation API: templates with full layout control in HTML/CSS/Liquid, or a visual Builder, called from your app or your automation tool, at high volume.

Choose PDFMonkey if you want:

  • full control over the layout, with HTML, CSS and Liquid, or a no-code Builder;
  • to generate thousands of documents a month at a low price: €15 for 3,000, with uncapped pay-as-you-go;
  • image output (WebP, PNG, JPG) next to PDFs;
  • official Ruby and Node.js SDKs and a CLI for developers;
  • official Workato and Bubble integrations, and EU hosting by default;
  • a CLI that AI agents like Claude Code or Cursor can use to edit and preview templates locally.

Choose DocsAutomator if you want:

  • to design templates in Google Docs or Microsoft Word, or on top of an existing PDF;
  • native connections to Airtable, Notion, Google Sheets, ClickUp, SmartSuite, Softr and more;
  • e-signatures and one-click acceptance in the same tool, plus approvals from the Business plan;
  • delivery to Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or by email, from your own Gmail or Outlook;
  • Swiss QR-bills, and unlimited seats on every plan;
  • a hosted MCP server with ready-made Claude and ChatGPT connectors.

Pricing at equivalent volumes

Monthly billing. For each volume, we show the plan that covers it on both sides. PDFMonkey’s pay-as-you-go would bring some of these totals down further, but it isn’t needed to come out cheaper. Yearly billing saves 10% on PDFMonkey and 25% on DocsAutomator.

These rows don’t compare the same thing, though: each DocsAutomator document can include e-signing, acceptance and delivery, which PDFMonkey doesn’t do. If you only need the file, PDFMonkey costs far less per document. If you need the whole signing workflow, add the cost of a signing tool to PDFMonkey before comparing.

Where DocsAutomator is the stronger choice

If your team lives in Airtable, Notion or Google Sheets, wants to edit templates in Google Docs or Word without touching HTML, and needs documents signed, approved and filed automatically, DocsAutomator covers the whole chain in one tool, with unlimited seats.

If you’ve read older comparisons

A few comparison pages still describe PDFMonkey as it was years ago. Here’s how things stand on 26 October 2026:

  • PDFMonkey doesn’t require HTML or CSS. The visual Builder needs no code. (docs)
  • Integrations go beyond Zapier and Make: n8n, Workato, Bubble and Glide are official too. (docs)
  • Image generation is available in WebP, PNG and JPG. (docs)

Moving from DocsAutomator to PDFMonkey

  • Templates are rebuilt, either in the Builder or as a Code Template. Google Docs and Word files can’t be imported.
  • Airtable, Notion or Sheets triggers move to Zapier, Make or n8n, with a PDFMonkey step to generate the document.
  • Line items and conditional sections become Liquid loops and conditions in Code Templates, or loops and conditions in the Builder.
  • Signing and delivery need their own steps: send the PDFMonkey download URL to your e-signature or storage tool from the same automation.
  • Test with the 30-day Pro trial: 300 documents, no credit card.

FAQ

Do I need to code to use PDFMonkey?

No. The PDFMonkey Builder is a visual drag-and-drop editor. Code Templates in HTML, CSS and Liquid are there if you want full control. DocsAutomator takes a third approach: you design templates in Google Docs, Microsoft Word or on top of an existing PDF.

Does PDFMonkey integrate with Airtable or Google Sheets?

Not natively. PDFMonkey connects to Airtable, Google Sheets and thousands of other apps through Zapier, Make or n8n, and has official integrations with Workato, Bubble and Glide. DocsAutomator lists native integrations with Airtable, Google Sheets, Notion, ClickUp and more.

Does PDFMonkey offer e-signatures?

No. PDFMonkey generates documents; signing is left to a dedicated tool. DocsAutomator includes e-signatures and one-click acceptance on every plan.

Which one is cheaper?

Per document, PDFMonkey: €15 a month covers 3,000 documents, while DocsAutomator’s Business plan is $79 a month for 1,000 documents (monthly billing). DocsAutomator’s price includes e-signing and delivery features that PDFMonkey doesn’t offer, so compare against what you actually need.

Can I try both for free?

Yes. PDFMonkey has a permanent free plan with 20 documents a month and a 30-day Pro trial with 300 documents, no card needed. DocsAutomator lets you test with unlimited preview documents and charges once you generate real documents.
